Society has changed remarkably over the past 2 decades. The pace has picked up and reaching our goals is not as easy or as practical as it used to be. Depression, anxiety, isolation, stress and the general pressures of modern life, have made people’s responses to them, more complex. Lifestyle and development centres all over the world have been looking into what these pressures do to one of the most negative social reactions to pressure, which is addiction.

In doing so, one thing has become apparent: addiction doesn’t happen like it used to, and so our approach to treating it also needs to change.

The Case for Alienation

Tough love, it was once called, is the process of pushing people away, particularly those that seem disinterested in treatment. The theory is that this serves as the needed wake-up-call, the rock bottom one can push up from; and in many instances it has worked, but both addiction and our understanding of it has changed.

Various studies have shown isolation to be a factor that significantly worsens addiction. Where addicts fail to find comfort in relationships and the people around them and where they are unable to form a meaningful part of any community, they tend to find those comforts in the substances or activities they already abuse.

Isolation compounds the severity of addiction and makes it all the more difficult to come out of.

Thusly, Zebulun lifestyle and development centre has turned to fostering a sense of community and a feeling of belonging, in those who are battling addiction.

Feeling part of a whole and relenting to a greater good are the things that demonstrate self-worth to those in recovery and allows them to take the steps they need to change their life.

Providing one with a feeling of being part of a community that gives them warmth and strength, is what gives those in recovery the inspiration they need to keep improving themselves.

Breaking away from addiction, especially with a strong support structure, the kind offered in a recovery centre is possible however, one of the biggest fears of ridding your life of its toxic elements is tackling what comes after.

For many on the road to recovery, the reality is that major aspects of their lives need to transform if they are to win their battles with addiction. Going back to a familiar and toxic environment after completing a recovery programme can have a devastating effect in undoing all the work and progress achieved during the programme; and for many, it is difficult to see what other options they may have.

If you or a loved-one struggles with addiction and faces the fear of what life could be like after a drastic change, or even how to make those changes, Zebulun is here to give you some clarity.

Our lifestyle and development centre, Zebulun, has found ways of helping those in recovery to get the opportunities they need to make these changes, and here’s how.

Value, Responsibility & Self Reliance

One of the biggest challenges faced by those in recovery is that, by the time addiction takes control of their lives, their sense of value, and therefore responsibility and worth, suffer negatively.

This feeling could be the result of letting loved ones and themselves down, it could be from social or family ostracization or a range and sequence of events and disappointments that have left that person feeling inadequate, frustrated and therefore more prone to letting their addiction defeat them.

Our lifestyle and development centre tackles the root causes of these problems, breaks the cycle of self-fulfilling prophecies and starts, by reminding those in recovery of their worth, both to themselves and to their communities.

A Sense of Community

Various studies into addiction have highlighted the important role that community plays in battling it. A support structure and being a part of something bigger than yourself has a lot to do with finding self-worth and a sense of responsibility needed to reach recovery.

Here at Zebulun, community is at the heart of everything we do. Our residents work, learn and council together. Everyone at Zebulun are in similar boats, and they all need to use the same tools to keep it floating.

This instils, in our residents, a sense of community that they carry with them into a successful future, that makes the road to recovery a sustainable one.

A Sustainable Future

For many of those in recovery, the thought of what their professional options could be once they have completed a recovery programme, may often cause some anxiety. Time spent battling addiction can lead to a lack of skills and experience in the workplace. Something that, making it difficult to build a livelihood, tends to result in cyclic abuse of substances, where addiction is present.

At our lifestyle and development centre, we help our residents build critical skills that will give them options to achieve success in their professional and personal lives, once their journey to recovery is complete.

We do this by providing courses to our residents which include but are not limited to those offered by major colleges such as the Trifocus Fitness Academy, FreeCodeCamp, the International Hotel School and Agricolleges International.

Contact Zebulun Lifestyle & Development Centre for Details

With the right tools in place to facilitate a sustainable road to recovery, it is never too late to work towards beating addiction.

If you or a loved one suffers from addiction and need to find change, contact the Zebulun Lifestyle and Development Centre today, or visit our website for details.

Zebulun is not only the sixth son of Jacob and one of the 12 tribes of Israel in the Bible, it is a lifestyle and development centre which is focused on the ability to improve the livelihood of all who enter the programme. The goal is not to “rehabilitate”, it is rather to ensure that individuals have the confidence to believe in their own choices and to equip them to make a success in society.

It is a chance to open up a new future for people who may have lost their path in life. On top of this, those who are in an unfortunate situation have the opportunity to add something to society.

Zebulun has been running for several years and first took the rehabilitation approach. They noted that in today’s culture, the old way of assisting people doesn’t work anymore. In many instances a person may be able to return to society as normal but are missing the tools to make something of their lives.

Therefore, the team of experts at Zebulun took a step back to look at the whole picture. When an individual lives a sober life, they may be able to handle situations completely different to how they used to, however, the biggest hurdle to overcome for these individuals is finding employment or any form of work.

This is how members of the Zebulun team were able to pinpoint exactly what people need. When you remove stigmas attached to homelessness, addiction and behaviour issues, you can find the source of the problem.

A multitude of the people who seek help do not have any kind of skills or qualifications to get out of their rut. Therefore, a major goal of Zebulun is to equip individuals with the ability to step out of the programme ready to work and improve their circumstances for themselves.

This is how the lifestyle and development centre was formed. Zebulun works with individuals within a safe space. In conjunction with this, the team will also look to develop these individual’s development skills. This includes the assistance of obtaining an adult matric certificate and other qualifications included in the program. These skills which are developed are skills which ensure that the individual is able to develop a CV and a list of references when going back into society.

A creation of good habits coupled with skills to improve economic situations is a recipe for success.

Zebulun is a space where people can develop their abilities. With commitment, integrity and teamwork, a few of the centre’s mantras, the focus for these individuals is to move from their current situation to a prosperous future.

Below is a list of some of the services, skills and qualifications provided to individuals attending the programme.

Addiction Counseling Course.

Master cognitive behavioural therapy, family counselling, and other types of therapy.

International Hotel School.
